Positioning

A formally recognised business development programme that applies New Venture Creation principles to the commercial realities of the South African fashion and apparel industry.

This is not a generic entrepreneurship course. Recognised New Venture Creation learning outcomes are applied directly to the realities of operating a fashion and apparel business — from costing a garment correctly to managing stock, pricing for wholesale, and planning production capacity.

Two things run in parallel throughout: the unit standards provide the formal, nationally recognised learning framework, and the Accelerator provides the industry context and practical application.

Idea → Market → Finance → Product → Production → Pricing → Sales → Business Plan → Growth

Module One

Business Opportunity & Innovation

Helps designers move beyond the creative concept and critically assess whether their product, brand or business opportunity has genuine commercial potential.

Unit Standards

  • 114596 — Research the viability of new venture ideas and opportunities (5 credits)
  • 114600 — Apply innovative thinking to the development of a small business (4 credits)

Fashion Industry Application

  • Defining the customer and the market opportunity
  • Assessing whether a fashion concept is commercially viable
  • Reading trends without simply following trends
  • Competitor analysis and business risk
  • Moving from designer-led to customer-led thinking

Modules covering market, brand, product, production, stock, costing, pricing, finance, funding, marketing and growth follow the same structure: purpose, unit standards, fashion industry application, and a practical output.

Every outcome is contextualised for fashion, apparel, clothing retail, manufacturing and designer-led businesses. This is where our industry knowledge carries the programme.
